Therapeutic Touch

What is Therapeutic Touch (TT)?

Therapeutic Touch is a holistic, evidence-based therapy developed by Delores Krieger that incorporates the intentional and compassionate use of universal energy to promote balance and well-being. Therapeutic Touch is the intentionally directed process of energy exchange that utilizes the hands to facilitate healing. It is an evidence-based intervention that complements conventional health and wellness care.

Therapeutic Touch is based on the theory that the body, mind, and emotions form a complex energy field that extends beyond the skin. While receiving Therapeutic Touch you remain fully clothed and a typical session lasts 10-20 minutes. If you have any questions about Therapeutic Touch, even during the session, you should feel free to ask the practitioner. You will be given time before to talk about any concerns you may have and also time afterward to relax.

1How can Therapeutic Touch benefit your health and well-being?
Therapeutic Touch is neither a miracle cure for disease nor a substitute for medical treatment. Therapeutic Touch has been shown to stimulate the body’s own natural healing process. It promotes deep relaxation, a sense of comfort and wellbeing, and a decrease in pain and anxiety levels. Research has also shown Therapeutic Touch may help to relieve nausea, constipation, and faster wound healing. Therapeutic Touch is beneficial with other therapies, such as acupressure, massage, imagery, biofeedback, and psychotherapy.
2Is Therapeutic Touch a religious practice?
No. Therapeutic Touch is not a faith-based practice. However, compassionate intention on the part of the practitioner is an essential component of Therapeutic Touch.
3The word Touch is in the name - is this like a massage?
Despite the use of the word “touch”, the hands usually hover over the body and don’t physically touch it. Your practitioner may request permission to touch you. Generally, this will be light touch. You can decide whether or not you would like to be physically touched during the session.
